FIRST SIGN OF SPRING today in Central Park

NEW YORK CITY finally started to thaw out……at least for a day.  Central Park was the place to be.  Everyone was basking in the sun……..kids having fun…….teens climbing trees and rollerbladers chasing the puck.

And more than just a few dogs were sniffing the smells of Spring!

CLICK ON:  A group of singers……..killing a Beatle’s Song!  OUCH!!!

BROADWAY from Macy’s  34th street all the way to 47th street……….is a PARTY!  Big time!  The biggest hit is the Toboggan Run.  Did I try it?  Oh, my aching back.  The first guys down the run yesterday were New York’s finest…….the FIREMAN.  So bold.  So butch!

TIFFANY & CO. Winter WINDOWS

TIFFANY & CO on Fifth Avenue was blessedly calm today.  Most of the three million holiday tourists have gone home…………New Yorkers have reclaimed their town.

The windows were charming.  Brownstones, limestones row houses and their water towers……all painted WHITE.  I love miniatures so the windows were especially interesting tome.  The JEWELS were secondary………..[valued around ONE MILLION].  I wonder if they remove them from the windows at night.

SUMMER in the SUBWAY……..Wild and HOT!

New York SUBWAYS in the summer……..you could die of  heat down there.

But nearly SIX MILLION ride them each day.  Thats over a BILLION and a HALF riders each year.

You’ll smell a lot of  SWEAT and see [or shed] a few TEARS.  Some MUSICIANS. A few RATS……lots of TRASH………a bit of ART and lots of screaming BRATS [just turn up your IPOD!]

Those who can’t take the heat………….take the bus………..and miss all the fun!

OFF TO THE APPLE STORE

Once a week I head for the Apple Store for a computer lesson.  Today it was the store on 5th ave.

The Plaza Hotel is just across the street……..[a 2 bedroom apt. will run you about $20 MIL.]

The entrance to the Apple is a hugh glass cube……….

Every tourist in New York hits the Apple store………..ipad mania.

Glass stairway to the level below the street……ie, basement………where I have my lesson.  I LOVE THIS STORE!.

Louis Vuitton is right next door.  Picked up a trendy leather briefcase to hold my stuff!.  At $2600…….NOT !

Abercromby & F……..  Must haves for tourists.

Giant pink rabbit walked by.

The fountain in front of the Plaza……..by Karl Bitter……”POMONA”……standing in the Pulitzer fountain.

The top apartment in the tower at the plaza is up for sale…….$19 mil and it’s yours.  Another was recently sold for  $5o million, but that one had a park view.

He can’t be calling me……I have no cell phone!

In the Plaza entrance……red Anthuriums.. ……..a bit early for Christmas.

A portrait of the precocious little ELOISE hangs in the Palm Court Passage.  Hilary Knight dreamed up this cute illustration of a little girl who lived in the Plaza.  I have all the books…which Hillary signed for me years ago.  Kay Thompson wrote the story…and when she died all the rights reverted to her estate.

For more on this subject read Sam Irvin’s book  KAY THOMPSON: FROM FUNNY FAVE TO ELOISE [Simon & Schuster].

Todd English has added another dozen concessioners to his FOOD COURT in the cellar of the Plaza. I savored a hugh slice of vanilla cake slathered in caramel icing…….. 1500 calories.

Lady M Cake Boutique……….well, yes……..she sells cakes.  Whole thing $100…..Slice $12.  And the green thing was delicious.

Francoise Payard Patisserie………..Molten Bombe………

Versace dinnerware……..$2000 a setting.

After snacking my way thru the food court……….a stop at the kids play land……. [Trump’s ice skating rink has this spot in the winter.]

The latest skyscraper  is still rising above Central Park……at 157 West 57th.  The penthouse was just sold for $125 mil.

The GAPSTOW BRIDGE…….lots of weddings take place on this little bridge in front of the Plaza Hotel.

Modesty blasé.

15 minutes in Washington Square Park

It only took  15 minutes to walk thru WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK………but my camera was bombarded with shots.  CLICK, CLICK, CLICK…….like crazy.

And what kind of park would it be without a pigeon?  Or two thousand ???
