NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY • World War 1

The current show of paintings of World War 1 are mostly of the tragedies and horror of the war……….too gruesome for me to include in this blog……..so I will only share a few that are “bearable to view”.

“Over Here…..Over There”…….Norman Rockwell’s famous painting of four doughboys ……………singing around the campfire……….is how the mass media presented the war to Americans.

This image was so successful it appeared on the sheet music for George M. Cohan’s popular song.

Henry Howard Houston Woodward………..painted by Violet Oakley…….was a fighter pilot in the service of the french Army.  His plane was reported missing on April 1, 1918.  The remains of his plane and his body were found a year later.

The interior of a Hospital Tent, 1918……….painted by John Singer Sargent……..while touring the western front and painted soldiers in non-combative activities.

THE RETURN of PRIVATE DAVIS from the ARGONE…….painted by John Curry.  William Davis was John’s high school friend……but his body was returned three years after his death.  It took John 17 years to complete this painting………so deep was his grief.

GAY PRIDE PARADE nyc 2014 / Boy Scouts Marching

Boy Scout officials have forbidden scouts to wear their uniforms in gay pride events.  Will theses scouts be kicked out for their brave action?

DAVID KNAPP, 88, carried a sign that said it all!  Kicked out for being GAY. For decades he was a scout……volunteer and professional staff member.

The drab khaki color of the uniforms were no match for the colorful gays in this parade.

I wonder if they will invent a new badge for brave “GAY” scouts.

The RAINBOW SCARF is a nice fashion statement………but will the officials accept it ???

Norman Rockwell did this cover for the magazine.  In the new book that is out about Norman………it is alluded that he was GAY!.  What a hoot!

THE RED ROOSTER Crows in Harlem

The RED ROOSTER is still one of my favorite places for lunch.

210 Malcolm X Blvd.  Right down the street from Bill Clinton’s office.

The decor is comfortable, casual…….no need to dress up.

Samuel works the room…………making sure his diners are satisfied.

You can start with delectable cornbread [it is NOT gratis]………..but worth the price.

PRAYING………….that they won’t get indigestion?

Chicken……….on the bone……….raisins and rice.  Yummy.

One on the many friendly servers.

LAMB STEW…………was very heavy handed.  Could have been any thing!

The chef and his sous………working at lightning speed.

My MEATBALLS………..tasty….but what was all that foam?

Our waiter just kept bringing the food.

His famous MAC & CHEESE…..heavy……..thick……..gooey……….5 cheeeses [that’s four too many].    The salad had lychee nuts, cauliflower and water chestnuts.  Way to wierd.

“So where’s our desert”?

A cupcake.  Different…..gooey with two tiny dollops of sherbet.  Shudda just ordered the sherbet.

I love the ethnic diversity of the diners.

The wall paintings are clever.  Couldn’t have done better myself.

The loo is campy………”shabby chic”.

Orchids are a nice touch…………tho orchids are a bit passe.

Loo lighting……Murano Glass……nice touvh.

Wall art…….Norman Rockwell …..the ORIGINAL………..nice touch.

Pantry…….selling my favorite…..BISCUITS.

The bar seating……..laptops welcome.

An outdoor  area has been added for the summer.  But………double the people dining……….double the work for the kitchen.  Will the quality suffer?
