DONUT or DOUGHNUT

100 years ago….donuts were caller “olykoek”…………that’s Dutch for “oily cake”

But now……..there’s a new kind of DOUGHNUT in  town……….

The “New York Doughnut Plant” has arrived in the Chelsea Hotel on West 23rd street.

Open for breakfast with a guilt assuaging  doughnut……..OATMEAL.

Mark Israel has been on the Lower East Side for years………..and now he’s renovated and designed his new space…….. turning it into a into a doughnut wonderland.

Tables and chairs………

Designed with a doughnut in mind.

The window bench is……………..

DOUGHNUTS……………..to sit on while you eat YOUR doughnut.

My breakfast pals and I……….ordered 12…………….for a taste test…………..and left with a hugh calorie intake…………and a few added pounds for sure.

Larger than life-size cushions cover the walls……….mimicking the actual doughnuts that are available to eat…………tho am not sure about the one that looks like a NYC baseball cap.

Wall………………the ugly black thing is a speaker.

DS and TV woofing down another………..

The sweet kid at the neighboring table………Leo……….loving his glazed Vanilla.

I went back to the selection board to choose some more………hmmmmm,,,,,,,Pistachio?  Blackout Chocolate?  Coconut Creme?

The cutie…..Dustin…….called out………”Tom, your order is ready”.

Chunks of peanuts………glaze…..blackberry jelly filling……….a SQUARE doughnut ! I ordered another !

Downtown club?  No…..it’s the bathroom………..!

Israel’s grandfather?………keeping his eye upon the donut and not upon the hole?

Ah Marilyn!  Eating her doughnut and showing off her “cupcakes”.

My name is Marilyn…………….where’s MY doughnut?

OSTERIA DEL PRINCIPE on East 23rd Street

While walking across East 23rd Street today………..I discovered a new Italian Osteria.

A restaurant with a contemporary setting but loaded with charm.

P1130082

What is an Osteria?  Originally……in old Italy….a place with simple wine and food.  But here you will get high end Italian wines and high end proscuitto as well as fine deli meats.

P1130086

If you have been to Bologna,Italy………..you will certainly have dated at “Osteria del Cappello”…… it has been there since 1375!  True!

Now you can get the same quality…….on 23rd Street……..but here it  is prepared “grand-ma style”.

P1130084

What is proscuitto?  A pig or wild boars ham [hind leg or thigh].

P1130085

Decor added for a “homey” touch.

P1130089

You may prefer to sit at the counter and watch the chef prepare your meal.

P1130093

It take about two years to “cure”proscuitto……….and a lot of salt.

P1130095

The wine bar tables…………a nice place to meet up with friends after work.

P1130097

Carlotta……..with her adorable accent…… will make sure your meal is a special one.

P1130100

And your waiter ………..ever so friendly………will guide you in your choices.

P1130098

Hmmmmm……..this machine is a bit intimidating………..but does add an “UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL” touch!

XAVIARS X20 Restaurant in Yonkers

Zaviars Restaurant is housed in this Victorian Pier…………the only pier like it on the Hudson river.

The three walls of glass frame vistas of the George Washington Bridge AND the Tapanzee Bridge.

P1110547

T’was a foggy day…….but the Manhattan skyline was there.  How comforting!

P1110553

If your “flambé dessert” was a bit too torched…………the Fire Rescue boat is right outside your window……just yell!

P1110552

The Empire State Building looms in the distance………as does the new “Billionaires Building”  at 157 West 57th street!

P1110570

BUT…..you don’t have to be a BILLIONAIRE to dine at Xaviars……….$24 for a pre fixe lunch is a “steal”.

P1110571

Nice touch at the hostess desk.

P1110574

Yes……it was my first trip to Yonkers.  But worth the 30 minute ride. Peter Kelly has created a class act with this restaurant.  Take the Amtrack…….$5. The restaurant is just a few steps from the station.

P1110585

When I went to the Loo……three elderly ladies were in there……….wondering why it had two urinals……I guided them to the Ladies Loo.

P1110596

Art just outside the bathroom door.

P1110620

I did appreciate the orchid bowl on each table.

P1110626

$15 a glass……..and strangely “unfruity” for a Riesling.  Marion’s Chardonnay was a better choice.

P1110637

We were all charmed by  Sam……a delightful waiter. On our next visit we will ask for him again.

P1110640

A bit tough those Coconut Shrimp……….[can’t really blame the little critters for this].  Dijon Mustard was the sauce.

P1110642

Pasta and shrimp……and crispy little sticks.  Nice touch.  Asian touches.

P1110645

P1110651

Sam replenishes the Donald with more rolls.  Warm and we all ate at least three.

P1110654

This is a different.!  White chocolate……..tasty!.  Morello cherries sauce.  Nice to look at….nice to eat.

P1110653

This flan was Marsha’s favorite.  Light…….easy to devour……….and she asked for more.

Lunch in Yonkers! XAVIARS X20 on the Hudson.

Today I actually took the train to YONKERS………for lunch.  I had heard about this restaurant that sits right on the Hudson……..with views of Manhattan…….[yes, it was hard to actually leave Manhattan].  On Saturday on my BLOG I will clue you in about the food………….

P1110637

And SAM our waiter………..

P1110626

And the wine choices……….

P1110609

And the food!  Til’ tomorrow.  Good night.

NYC Streets…….people…….food…..friends

Lunch at JOANNE’S without Lady Gaga

It was ITALIAN RESTAURANT WEEK in NYC………..so we decided to give JOANNE’S TRATTORIA another try.  Lady GAGA bought the place for her dad…..and it is rumored that she sometimes eats there.

P1060706

From the street the restaurant looks like a charming place for dining.

P1060674

This is the only glance we got of Lady Gaga.  A wall plaque.

P1060684

Starting with a glass of the house wine……….bode well.

P1060677

Nice bread basket…..but we weren’t served any!  Strange!

P1060683

The Trattoria has a new lunch menu.  Everything is $12.

P1060687

The best part of the meal was the ever flowing chilled tap water……tho sparkling was only $6.

P1060690

Our waiter was a charming young man………new at this game but trying hard.

P1060691

It is strange that the room has no personality……..nothing Italian  for ambiance.

P1060692

Yes, the dishwasher missed this bit of someone else’s meal on my fork.

P1060696

My “rare” hamburger was as hard as a rock.  The side of Mac & Cheese was delish……….  absolutely the best part of the meal.

P1060695

This was the special salad……….but the chicken was extra$$.

P1060698

Meatball parmesan………. rock hard and grey.  Donald ate it anyway.

P1060699

The “Justin Bieber” look-alike at the next table was bored stiff.  His Pizza Bolognese was all sauce and no pizza.  Weird!

P1060701

Coconut cake……….slipping and sliding….was right out the Betty Crocker Box.  We ate it all.  $12.

P1060702

Cafe Americano……….$4…….hot but no refills.

P1060705

So………ITALIAN WEEK……..and no sign of the PRIX FIXE $26 lunch.  will we return……….NO.  I paid with a $100 Gift Certificate………..which was at first rejected…….the waiter said it had already been cashed!  DUH!  How could that be when I had it right there in my hand?  My change was a credit for 34 cents.
