KAREN SANTRY paints Samurai and Geisha

Karen is a fashion illustration professor at FIT.  She loves painting larger than life Samurai and Geisha [Japanese female entertainers].

DANCE AND FASHION………a Century of Ballet Costumes

The FASHION INTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY here in Manhattan has a thrilling exhibit of fashion in the ballet world.

You can see Margo Fonteyn’s ballet slippers………or Rudolph Nureyev strutting his…..!

Dance and Fashion are two great forms of art.  Designers like Christian Dior and Christian Louboutin have designed for the ballet.

FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

The graduate students in the fashion department at F I T………2013 …….must create a runway show of their designs.  Sketches come first.  Off to MOOD for fabrics.  Patterns have to be cut out.  Fittings on a form.  And as Tim Gunn would say…….”EDIT EDIT EDIT”.  And these students have done that.

The video is 30 minutes long.  View the entire show …….your will be surprised by the incredible talent these students have.  The fashions are fantastic.

 

COMIC BOOK HEROS arrive in Gotham

FIT.……..Fashion Institue of Technology has put tohether a fun exhibit………………“HEROS and VILLAINS”.  Batman……….Wonder Woman………all of your favorite comic book heroes.  This exhibition was curated by the 4th years students at FIT’S visual presentation and exhibition design department.

KAREN SANTRY…..my artist friend…..wiped out by HURRICANE SANDY

Karen is sooooo talented.  Fine art painter, fabulous fashion illustrator…and a dear friend.

She is currently Professor of art at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

She is also the Vice President of Fashion Art Bank…….a world licensing company for Fashion Illustration.

Figures from her Kabuki series………..these are NOT fabric collages…….rather paintings that look like fabrics.

All of these beautiful figures…..some 12 feet tall……have all been destroyed in the flood of hurricane Sandy.

Karen lives in an Artists Community Housing called WESTBETH……..in Chelsea.

Her 30 years of art were stored in two storage spaces if the basement of Westbeth.

The hurricane filled the studios with water……10 feet deep.  A tragedy!

Karen was also a Lilly Fellow in the Art Dept. at Yale.  She is currently a member of The Society of Illustrators where we meet for lunch.

Karen was the artist who painted David Bowie in his famous leather jacket. She earned her print making techniques from Andy Warhol.  Hurricane Sandy has not dampened her spirit.  She is an inspiration to all of her Artist friends.

BARBIE………Let’s Paint the Town Pink

Pantone and Barbie team up in an exhibition at Fashion Institute of Technology here in New York.  Students from around the world took part……..each depicting what their “DREAM BARBIE” would be like.
