A behind the scenes visit at the AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

The American Museum of Natural History on Central Park West …….offers a snapshot of North America’s rich environmental heritage.

Teddy Roosevelt….President of the US ……1901-1909.

Don…….Teddy and Patricia….and they all appear to be about the same age !

Patricia drew the art for this bronze medallion on imbedded in the floor of the Great Hall.

The hall first opened in 1942…..focuses on 46 mammal species.

Patricia did all of the new signs for 43 of the dioramas…..[each drawing outlined in white].  Stunning!

BLACK BEAR………December Morning in Southern Florida………..spotting a cottonmouth snake in this Cypress swamp.

Don  listens while explains Patricia how these dioramas were stunningly restored.  A team of artists, designers, taxidermists and conservators worked for more than a year to restore the dioramas.

COUGAR [Mountain Lion].  Arizona’s Grand Canyon is a perfect habitat for Cougars.  Artists worked hard to re-color the faded fur.

Dall Sheep……August at Midnight in the Denali National Park, Alaska.  Also know as “White Sheep”……….good camouflage against the snow.

Grand Caribou……….September in Alaska.  also known as Reindeer……at home in the tundra……land that is too cold for trees to grow.

Patricia at her desk……where her art is created.

Donald making a new friend with……….

Nicole………Scientific assistant has worked for two years on recurating the Marsupials.

All lined up in a row…..I was even allowed to pet one.

This is a Marsupial.  One of Patricia’s beautiful drawings.  See more on her website:

OKAMOTO STUDIO……..at Tavern on the Green

Today in Central Park……..at Tavern on the Green…….the Park Conservancy hosted a fund-raising event………..Ice Sculpting.

The Tavern.………..once a fabulous restaurant……….now an information booth for tourists.

Tourists wondering what will spring forth from that block of ice.

120 pounds of the cold stuff.

Tools of the trade……and Thomas Brown is a master at using them.

 Michaelangelo, move over !

Sawing and glueing [with water]…..the two blocks together.

And we all wonder what it going to become! ?

The ANGEL on top of the Bethesda Fountain.

“WOW”…….says Don………….”incredible says ” Don Juan.

Details in her wings are starting to take shape.

“This guy is really is great with his tool”……says an amazed tourist.

Her arms are taking shape.

The Conservancy was passing out HOT CHOCOLATE.  Real chocolate and real milk.  I had three cups.

Face taking shape.

Lovely faces in the crowd……admiring his work.

It has taken him 3 hours to complete the statue.

“Hey, Mr. Brown…….can you sculpt me a boy doggie?”

Pouring on water to soften the edges of her wings.

“Where are we……the North Pole?”

Almost finished…………..just a bit more scraping.

“Can I have a lick?”

The finished Bethesda Angel.  The original statue was designed by emma Stebbins.  Her inspiration came from the Gospel of Saint John…..Chapter five.

If you walk over to the fountain………..you can see the original.  She holds a Lily in her hand…..the symbol of purity.

We all clapped …………and I yelled “BRAVO”.
