OLD NEW YORK PHOTOS

Old……but oh so lovely.

Wandering on Wall Street

Wandering around the caverns of Wall Street…….second time in a week.  The place is fascinating.  Sights…..sounds……..smells.  Tourists in the mix.  Construction everywhere.  The very narrow streets somehow add to the fun.  Two million people there on a daily basis ……. mind boggling.  But my little camera loves it all.

Construction is happening on almost every street.  Do we really need more skyscrapers?  Yes!

When I see construction workers I always stop and talk to them…and take teir photos.  They are pleased to pose.  Anxious to talk about their project.

My father was a HARD HAT………..and proud to be a carpenter.

This is a rare picture of George Cathey……….working on the Mackinaw Bridge in upper michigan in the 1950’s.

CITIES WHERE I HAVE LIVED

Some for years………..others for only a short time.  But I have loved them all.

In London I lived right around the corner from OLYMPIA……the exhibition center famous for the Chelses Flower Show……one of the most famous in the world.  This year the dates are May 22-26.

STATUE OF LIBERTY.  Paid for by millions of French school children gave small contributions.  Of course, she was designed by Frederic August Bartholdi.  She arrived in New York from France in 1885………all 350 pieces of her…..n 2225 crates.  Americans collected money to pay for the base on which she stands.

Cute little Citroen car….favorite of Parisians…..small enough to park anywhere……even on the sidewalk.  It is a crazy car to drive…..but fun.

The famous night club……..Moulin Rouge {the Red Windmill}…..in Place Pigalle.

Very baudy floor show….famous for it’s “Can-Can” girls.  Oh LaLa !

Brasserie Lipp……….Paris……..with the same decor since 1926.  A place to drink beer, wine and coffee.  A place to sit and read, write and vitit with the ghosts of past celebrities……Marcel Proust,Chagall Yvs Montand and my favorite…Simone Signoret………..whose loft in SoHo I had a chance to rent….when I moved from Boston to New York.

LUNCH at The River Cafe

The River Cafe in Brooklyn had produced many culinary stars……..Larry Forgione,Charlie Palmer,David Burke and many others.

It sits on a site that was once abandoned by New York….and it took 12 years of haggling to get permission to build it.

Be prepared for one of the most fabulous meals you will ever have.

The “car-hop” is there if you need him.  [subways riders?].

The entrance is tucked away is a corner of the garden.

Private Party Room was not in use.

Weather was “iffy”…..so terrace was not available.

View of Manhattan from the terrace.

Halibut and white beans…………with no fishy taste.  Loved it.

Filet Mignon…..done to perfection.

An egg………breaded and deep fried……..with foam.

A dessert for three……or more.

Lovely garden to sit in…………while waiting for your table.

The only Restaurant in New York with it’s own potting shed.

And I promised you a rose garden………

The Carousel is housed in a $9 million dollar glass box….tucked under the Brooklyn Bridge.

$2 a ride………….and it is exhilerating…..and cheaper than a therapist.

Some of our city’s finest……….getting a new medal.

Off to do some more shopping.

Jane’s Carousel in DUMBO

  • DUMBO!……a stupid person!?  No,  for New Yorkers  it’s an anacronym for” DOWN UNDER THE MANHATTAN BRIDGE OVERPASS”.   Located in Brooklyn…….on the waterfront……in Empire State Park.

JANE’S CAROUSEL…………has finally opened.

Jane Walentas rescued these ponies 25 years ago……from a burned out theme park in Ohio.  It had taken all these years to restore it to it’s original glory.

PONY UP 2 BUCKS…..and he’s yours…..the mount of your choice.

A Palomino……….. perhaps?

Can you handle a prancer?

Patricia chose a Stallion.  Brave soul!

Donald settled in on a trotter.  What!  You thought he’d choose a bucking bronco?

She seems terrified by her choice!  Notice, they have the same Dentist !

I chose the carriage…..that’s me [that you can’t see]……crouching down.

Lots of prancing ponies to choose from.

This beauty awaits your pleasure………

Could be Alexander the Great‘s horse……..Bucephalus.

Back to Manhattan………..a brisk walk across the Brooklyn Bridge……….and you’re home!

FRANK GEHRY on Spruce Street

Frank Gehry is definately changing the skyline of New York……with a spectacular new rental building.

His new building on Spruce Street in lower Manhattan at 870 feet  is now the tallest residential building in the western hemisphere.

There are several hundred different floor plans to choose from.

It’s placement in the midst of Wall Street’s ancient architecture is a striking contrast.

The undulating walls create bay windows allowing residents to “step out into space”.

The building is located near the Brooklyn Bridge,Tribeca, the South Street Seaport and Chinatown is just steps away.

There are over 1000 apartments to chose from with one bedrooms about $5000.  A two bedroom [about 600 square feet] is around $6,300 per month. These are located midway in the building.  Add $20 per floor as you go higher…..for the same apartment.
