The ANSONIA HOTEL was opened in 1904………opulent………some apartments had 20 rooms. Chickens were raised on the roof…….and fresh eggs delivered to each resident every morning.
The hotel had a dining room that could hold 1300 people……….a ballroom…and the world’s largest swimming pool [where Bette Midler started her singing career………….the pool was a gay spa at this point].
The architect was a Frenchman named Paul Deboy…….. the owner of the hotel was William Earl Dodge Stokes and he decided to dump his architect………paid him $5ooo and shipped him back to France.
On the ground floor……..tucked away in a tiny space is my favorite spot for morning tea.
The charm of Patisserie Margot begins before you even get inside.

OH GOSH………….lemon curd tart……….one please. [Maybe two].
Blackberries……….I can’t resist! As a child growing up in Georgia…….we had an acre of thorny blackberry bushes. I picked and ate them by the bucketful.
Margot sells her sweets in containers that I designed! Nice.

The BRIE sandwich is the one I can’t resist.
Simple setting…………no fussy frou-frou…….no Eiffel Towers on the wall…….
The peach tart……….at $28………..is a steal………..[on the east side of Manhattan is goes for $45] .
Sitting next to me…….with her expresso and muffin…….sata dancer with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet………..chic…….sweet……..but I dare not reveal her name………..she was late for class and hurried off.
Is that not the strangest little white beard you have ever seen…………his name……..I dare not reveal it!
Do drop in………..Margot is in the kitchen.
