Musée Bourdelle

It’s not New York…….but every New Yorker will enjoy this when in Paris.

Les Musées de Paris

With so many glorious districts to explore, Paris’ 15th arrondissement tends to get ignored. The city’s largest arrondissement, the 15th is largely residential, and admittedly very quiet. True, the Parc André Citroën isn’t Paris’ most exciting park, and its southernmost regions aren’t the most happening areas of the city. I’ve written before about how much I hate the Gare Montparnasse. But the 15th has many charms, and if you take some time to explore it, you’ll stumble upon some hidden gems. The finest of these is the Musée Bourdelle.

lesmuseesdeparis-bourdelle-2Three minutes’ walk from Montparnasse, the Musée Bourdelle is a beautiful, almost pastoral oasis. The former studio of a sculptor who worked with Rodin and marked French sculpture for decades, the Bourdelle is both a preserved work space and an elegant exhibition site for the sculptor’s works.lesmuseesdeparis-bourdelle-4

You can save a few bucks and see ALEXANDER on the Columbia University Campus……for free!

Kind of sad……..he did so much for America………….but felt the American world was not for him.

NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY • World War 1

The current show of paintings of World War 1 are mostly of the tragedies and horror of the war……….too gruesome for me to include in this blog……..so I will only share a few that are “bearable to view”.

“Over Here…..Over There”…….Norman Rockwell’s famous painting of four doughboys ……………singing around the campfire……….is how the mass media presented the war to Americans.

This image was so successful it appeared on the sheet music for George M. Cohan’s popular song.

Henry Howard Houston Woodward………..painted by Violet Oakley…….was a fighter pilot in the service of the french Army.  His plane was reported missing on April 1, 1918.  The remains of his plane and his body were found a year later.

The interior of a Hospital Tent, 1918……….painted by John Singer Sargent……..while touring the western front and painted soldiers in non-combative activities.

THE RETURN of PRIVATE DAVIS from the ARGONE…….painted by John Curry.  William Davis was John’s high school friend……but his body was returned three years after his death.  It took John 17 years to complete this painting………so deep was his grief.

THOMAS JEFFERSON vs. TRUMP

This is a bronze plaque just around the corner from Trump Tower.

DONALD has probably stepped on it hundreds of times!
