There are a lot of surprises on the streets of Jersey City………art exhibits at City Hall……with the Soldiers and Sailors Monument out front.

Simple but authentic decor……….just like one of those cute cafes in Paris.

The Public Monuments are impressive.  The Soldiers and Sailors monument in front of City Hall by the sculptor Philip Martiny is utterly magnificent.  The SIBERIA monument…………well….!!!

AFTERNOON TEA with friends from the Royal Ballet

My friends from the Royal Ballet in Birmingham have been in town for 5 days.  Dougie was setting up the stage at City Center for a performance by the Sarasota Ballet…..using the Royals set.  The lovely Claudia took time off from the Royal Ballet School in London.  Brother Alex [wearing John Lennon’s sunglasses]……..is a tennis coach in New Jersey.  James [with the adorable smile] is a student of dramatic arts.

We lunched at AG’s Kitchen on the upper West Side………the burgers there reign supreme.

Matthew, the owner of Cafe Minerva, has recently opened HAMILTON’S LUNCHEONETTE [51 Bank Street].  Nostalgia has returned to the neighborhood………and at prices that are hard to believe!

Chatsworth Funeral for The Duchess of Devonshire.

It was a sad day in England…………Deborah Mitford Cavendish…..the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire was buried.

She wrote many books ………….. this one “ALL IN ONE BASKET”.

Being a Mitford…………she and her sisters were anything but conventional.

 

Grand-Hall-Chatsworth

The main hall at Chatsworth House………with its 297 rooms and another 100 bathrooms and 32 kitchens.  600,000 tourists now visit the mansion every year.

She inherited the estate…..35,000 acres….when her husband, the duke died.  What she inherited was a tremendous debt in owed taxes……[ 285 millions in todays money].  But she turned it into a money maker………tourists……. tours…….restaurants and she sold jars of her famous “Dutchess’s Marmalade”.

Buried in a simple wicker basket………..among the Cavendish graves in the village churchyard.

600 members of her staff…………and hundreds of other mourners lined the way to her place of burial………..dead at age 94.

Diana married Britain’s fascists leader Oswald Mosley……and they spent the years of the war in prison.

Max Mosley………..son of Oswald………..whom I met here in New York…………and  treated me to a gustatory dinner at La Boîte en Bois.…….just steps away from my apartment.  He was totally charming.

So I took my ticket to their cafe in Central Park. That’s me in the pink shirt and baseball cap…………sharing a table with two lovely ladies [tourists from London].
