Two PHOENIXES Float in New York

The PHOENIXES were born in CHINA …..and now they float in  New York City.

These monumental birds soar in the nave of the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in Morningside Heights.

Xu Bing…….a world famous artist………was in the Cathedral with a crew if 8 erecting the birds and then hoisting them 20 feet up into the air.

This is HUANG……the female……..soaring toward the bronze doors of the church.

She is poised to take flight in the middle of the night.

The tail of FENG….the male……….sails away from the alter.

The birds bodies are constructed from salvaged construction debris…….pliers, saws…..screw drivers….hammers and shovel heads.

In China’s history, Phoenixes represent luck…….prosperity and power.

Xu Bing.………a conceptual atist…… has used plastic tubing to create these fantastic wings…….tiny lights edging the “feathers”.

The two birds weigh over 12 tons………they measure 90 and 100 feet long.  They take on a sacred quality in the Cathedral.  You can see them soar here for one year.
