ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST HOME DESIGN SHOW: Barry Entner / GLASS with Sass

At the ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST HOME DESIGN SHOW 2012 on Pier 94 in the Hudson River I met Barry Entner……….a designer of Contemporary Glass Lighting and Sculpture.  Using his own unique vision he creates otherworldly forms using innovative techniques.  I was “stunned” by their visceral beauty.

DIFFA and David Rockwell…the design impresario

The DIFFA Dining by Design benefit dinner [on Pier 94 in the Hudson River] was a gals evening.  David Rockwell’s table was a study in simplicity.

There were about 500 guests at this gala event.  At $500 a ticket…….a quarter of a million dollars was raised for the fight against AIDS>

Each chair was a different design………..perhaps symbolizing the differences in the people who once occupied them.

The entire table was dripping in melted wax……visible reminders of our triumph over darkness.

When you have a lot of candles lit…..their presence is dominant………..you cannot ignore them.

AIDS has taken the lives of many of our friends.  The partly melted candles are symbolic of their lives…….but they live on in my memory.

DIFFA does Shellmania

DIFFA 2012 on Pier 94 on the Hudson River

“SHELL SHOCK” when I saw this masterpiece.  Reminded me of the 15 years I spent on the beaches of Sanibel……collecting  shells……[which I have saved]……and now I know what to do with them.

Exquisite lighting………this table setting was created by Dwayne Clark and Bob Gaynor.

Arte Italica provided the glassware…….[some of which is in my own collection].

I shall treat my own “Garden Goddess” with this decolletage.

At first I thought……….why the BELL?  Well, it is a tiny tureen cover.  And…..”the calla lillies are in bloom” [eg  Katherine Hepburn].

So many to thank for making this creation possible.  Lillian August deserves beaucoup “kudos”.

La Crema Wines was very generous in supplying hundreds of bottles of wine…….and it was all consumed.

I will not re-create the white plaster table……….[will use a table cloth to simulate the look].

Silver…..coral and starfish……….

Clever use of the lucite chairs………thank you RDYC  Interior Design and Architectural Development for your support .

MY FLY AROUND NEW YORK CITY

I finally got up the courage to fly in a small airplane.  The pilot lives here in my building.

A trusty little one engine Cessna.  The weather was beautiful when we started………….then a fog set it and refused to lift. We lifted off anyway.

Was fantastic to see Miss Liberty…..on her Island.

Because of 911 Security…………you can’t fly over NYC…….just around it.

The construction site where the Twin Towers once stood.  My little Lumix telephoto did it’s best to take pictures in the fog.

On the right you can see the trees that have been planted at the 911 Memorial Site.

WALL STREET…….Govenors Island is in the middle on the right.

My apartment……….in the tower in the middle of the photo.

The San Remo Towers……….towering over Central Park……….home to Steven Spielberg and many other famous people.  A nice apt there…..like Dustin Hoffman’s will run you 25mil………more if it has a direct park view.

The Tappan Zee Bridge over the Hudson River.  They are planning on constructing a new one soon.

Curving bridge into Nyack New York.  Mikhail Baryshnikov lives along the water on the left.   You can see him dance……..click below

The Majestic Towers………..Deco fron the 1930′s

The Colliseum Sports Arena near Macy’s.

And we landed safely back in New Jersey.  It was an experience…….except for that damn FOG!

LUNCH WITH THE LOVELY LAURA

We met at AYZA…….Wine and Chocolate Bar on West 31st street.

Laura and Chrystie…………and a very sweet waitress helped us decide which chocolate is the most divine.  Jacque Torres champagne truffles or ……..

Molten Chocolate cupcake with raspberry sauce.  Good choice.

We paused for water at the garden in the middle of the street in front of the Flatiron Building.

Giant Head sculpture in Madison Square Park by the Spanish artist Jaume Plensa.  Her name is “Echo”………..44 feet tall……inspited by the Greek mythological nymph.

She was having a ball with her chalk.

Stopped for YOGO on the corner of the park.

We picked up a Rustic Tuscan loaf at Eataly food emporium on Fifth Avenue.

Georgia peaches were enticing.

We strolled up Fifth Avenue to 31st street……..toward the Empire State Building

We liked the menu…………but we just ate!  Back later………..for dinner.

We headed for the High Line, the new park built on the railroad tracks along the Hudson River.

Met two really charming students….Rosemary and Brittany…

so cute…..I wanted to take them home with me…………for tea on the terrace.

We stopped in at the BORTOLAMI Gallery on West 20th street.

The current show is by the artist Thilo Heinzman.

Laura met one of her clients………….the director of the gallery.  Cute guy!
