Lunch at the Gotham is always a pleasure……..and has been so for 27 years,,,,,,,, ever since it opened in Greenwich Village. Chef Alfred Portale’s cuisine draws New Yorkers back to his restaurant over and over.

The creative dishes keeps the Gotham experience fresh year after year. Art connoisseurs love coming here for the ever changing art exhibits.

There is an allure to the room…..which gets updated often to “stay in style”.

Dining alone? The bar will give you a “signature menu” created just for you.

These particular bottles will deeply cut into your bankroll. Otherwise, the wine list comes from top wine makers and hard to obtain vintages .

The room is smart and sophisticated…….but casual enough to allow it’s diners to dress as they choose……….pretention does not reign here.

My lunch partner, Terry, dressed in jeans…….not a tux………appreciated the way the service staff treated us with warmth and respect.

We ordred from the special “Restaurant Week ” menu…….$25 for three courses. SUNCHOKE SOUP ……blood orange reduction and satsuma mandarin emulsion.

SALAD………kale….radicchio……parmesan and muscat vinaigrette. Wierd perhaps but interesting.

A free Gotham Journal is yours for the taking…….with coveted recipes for you to try at home.

Every “Restaurant Week Menu” seems to offer SALMON ! Here it is served up with Calypso beans, escarole, thumbelina carrots in a white wine emulsion. Currently “emulsions” are all the rage………but it works here.

CARAMEL PANNA COTTA: Braeburn apples, oatmeal crumble and maple ice cream. More ice cream and less of the slimy apples would have worked better.

SORBET: Apricot, raspberry and pear. All three are supurb.

ORANGE PARFAIT: This was the winner ! Butterscotch cake, passion fruit, brown butter ice cream and spiced meringue. A second helping please.

When you leave your table [cell phone call.....mother nature call]……the waiter domes your plate to keep your food it warm. Nice touch………..just part of your Gotham experience.
