It is a simple Continental Cafe…………no pretense………. just delightful cuisine.

GILA lets her walls serve as a gallery for students down the street at The School of Visual arts.  This painting [a New Yorker] was on exhibit.

P1110024

MEET THE ARTIST:  Paul Thiesing…….a student in the Illustration Department at the SVA.

Paul’s painting is now in our collection……..on the wall of my art studio………hanging next to the Picaasso.  Marie Laurencin [Picasso's lover ] is the painting in the bottom right corner.

STANDING ON THE CORNER of 26th st. and 7th ave.

Dozens of people……..standing on the corner………waiting for the traffic light to change.  A fun chance for me to “people watch”, snap some candids………and enjoy a cup of tea.

P1100814

Sitting in the window at the  CAFFÉ BENE.……….banana waffle and a green tea…………just watching New Yorkers go by.  A delightful afternoon.

ILONA’S 94th Birthday Party / PART 2

Ilona’s 94th Birthday celebration at the TREMONT RESTAURANT in Greenwich Village was a happy occasion………. a gathering of her dear friends.  She kept us entertained.  Tom Casesa with his portable wind pipe piano was a pleasant surprise………..as he piped out HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

ILONA’S 94th Birthday / TREMONT RESTAURANT

It was a joyous celebration…….Ilona’s 94th Birthday.  Friends gathered round to wish her many many more.  Tremont Restaurant in Greenwich Village hosted the party……….and it was beautiful.  The pastry chef, Elona [no relation to Ilona] baked a special cake……….chocolate ganashe with a deliriously delicious butter creme frosting!

Our waiter, John…….treated us all so royally………we feel like he is now one of our family.

CLICK ON THE CAKE.……to see it in all it’s glory.

Annual MACARON DAY in NYC

Francois Payard brought this annual celebration from France six years ago.  15 restaurants will be giving away FREE MACARONSScreen Shot 2014-03-20 at 3.28.32 PM

I got mine at EPICERIE BOULUD on Broadway and 64th street.

Please buy at least a dozen……..then continue your “macaron crawl“.

P1040609

Grab a cappuccino……..

P1040626

The quiet before the crowds appear ……the special password [“Macaron Day NYC”.

P1040624

So!  What is a MACARON?  A sweet meringue-based cookie………eggs…..icing…..lots of sugar…..ground almonds and food coloring.

P1090544

Some people call the “Luxemburgerli“.

P1090545

This one was “over-the-top”.

P1090546

I bought a dozen of these……..RASPBERRY is always my fave.

P1040620

How can you live without a jar of Morello Cherries in Kirsch.

P1090533

The sous-chef……..around the corner……a ciggie break.

P1090540

RAT ATTACK / Tavern on the Green

The Tavern on the Green is under a complete renovation……….being restored  it to it’s original splendor…..when it was a Sheepfold.  It was built in 1870 by Calvert Vaux  In 1934 it was turned into a Restaurant.

P1090334

The unions refused to negotiate with the chefs who were trying to re-open the Tavern after it was bankrupted by the unions.

P1090337

So…..the RAT is back!  The friend of the unions.

P1090338

So now what are they complaining about!

P1090341

Uh OH !  Two rats……..double trouble.

P1090343

Maybe we should hire the flute of the Pied Piper to rid of these RATS.

OLD DETROIT PHOTOS / by Bill Rauhauser

These photos of OLD DETROIT were taken by Bill Rauhauser..  He has been involved with photography for 60 years.  Detroit has been his main subject……..walking its streets and alleys…..in the 1940′s with his camera.

In January Bill was named 2014 Kresge Eminent Artist.

One of his many books is: “20th Century Photography in Detroit ]2010]

BOB-LO Island………..reached by boat………..an adventure for every kid in Detroit.  Bill also did a book: “Bob-Lo Revisited“.

The “Coney Island” hot dog was 10 cents.

2008-033-131

My family went to the EASTERN MARKET every saturday in the summer.  Canning tomatoes were $1 a bushel.  My mother made soup for the winter months.

FANNY FARMER……yes, from the cook book fame.  She also opened a chain of candy stores.  Every Friday after school……….I bought one candy bar…………”chocolate mint chip”……….25 cents.  I cut into pieces and made it last for days.

$1 for a haircut seems steep.  I wonder what it cost for a Burlesque ticket?

Rauhauser_Kresge File_2.jpg.CROP.original-original

This photo is so “Parisian” looking.  Wonder where it was taken.

Rauhauser_Kresge File_3.jpg.CROP.original-original

A haircut and a shine…………and a steak.

Street Cleaner.  Today he would be an Abercromby & Fitch model.

Lunch with ILONA

Don and I picked Ilona up in front of her apartment………time for another fun lunch in Greenwich Village.

P1090262

The BEATRICE INN has installed a bench in front of there restaurant just for Ilona to have a place for a wee bit of rest.

P1090266

We got around the corner and paused again.  We do this at every bench we pass.

P1090324

TARTINE

……….a sweet little cozy bistro on the corner of West 11th street crosses west 4th street.

P1090269

I always take her a trinket…………this time it was turquoise.

P1090297

And to keep her warm………..a “faux” mink jacket.  And flowers for her new hat.

P1090299

She adores French onion soup…………just the way she used to have it in Paris.

P1090300

I chose tomato soup freshly made with REAL tomatoes.  Drops of basil oil.

P1090302

Donald shared Ilona’s crock.

P1090307

FINI!

P1090303

At the neighboring table we enjoyed meeting two lovely young ladies from Hawaii………..studying in San Francisco.  Tatiana [in the hat] is majoring in Advertising.

P1090305

Ali will be an architect some day.

P1090310

When Ilona can get a genuine Coq au Vin………..she is delighted.  And at TARTINE………..they cook it just like they do in Paris.

We all needed a bit o’ green.
